The Big Day
When Your Puppy is Ready to Leave the Nest!
Puppies are ready to leave the nest at about 10 to 14 weeks of age. If they are smaller than average, we might keep them for a few more weeks to grow.
Some tips for bringing your new puppy home!
- For local pick ups, we recommand that you bring a carrer with a soft towel or blanket and water to carry your puppy. Since it would be their first time in a car, it is not unusual for them to tremor with anxiety or get car sick. Their carrier will give them some comfort for the trip back home.
- For smallers dogs especially puppies, I would recommand a harness over a collar for walks around the neighborhood.
- Feed your puppies three small meals a day until they're about 6 month. And please be aware that a sudden change of food (and environment) will sometimes cause a small puppy to have an upset stomach. We will provide you with a small bag of food, our dogs are fed Royal Canin Mini (
) formulated for small dogs. If you wish to change their food, please do it gradually by mixing the old kibbles with the new
over a period of days. Avoid all treats until they are old enough.
- Certain types of human food are dangerous to dogs, be familiar with them and if your every unsure -ask your vet. Some food such as Chocolate, Grapes, Raisins, Turkey Skin, Walnuts, Macadamia nuts, Onions, Sugarless Candy and Anti-Freeze (which tastes sweet) are TOXIC for your dogs.
- Take a few days off work. For a smooth transistion into a new environment, plan ahead and pick a date from where you will have the most free time with your new puppy. Make sure you stick to a well organized and firm scedule. Puppies can be easily trained if they stick to the same routine.
- Potty training must be consistant in order for it to be effective. Puppies at a younger age will have a small bladder and tend to pee more often. By taking them to the same potty place and confining them in an enclosed place when you're not playing with them -will speed house breaking considerably faster.
- On arrival day, let your puppy rest and try to avoid big crowds until your puppy is familiar and confident with his or her surrounding. Avoid baths for the first few days and it's always a good idea to avoid places until they are much older and strong because they can pick up illnesses from other animals.
- Biewers hair are like humans and will continually grow until they are trimmed. Invest in a few good brushes if you plan to grow their hair out and be sure to comb it everyday to avoid tangles. Doggy shampoo and conditioner will leave your dog with beautiful soft hair. Avoid human shampoo because it
dries the skin and hair out.
- Important spots to keep trimmed are the hair on their feet, rectum (always make sure it's clear), nails and ears.
- One of the genetic trait about Biewers, is that they do have abnormally large and thick ears and as a result of the weight, their ears will sometimes not stand or droop during teething. You can try taping the ears (there are many guides online) to strengthen the shape.
- Rabies vaccination are usually given at 4-6 months -in addition to their up to date shots. It's best that you plan with your vet to take the shots separately (a week apart?) because I find that it's easier on the smaller dogs.
- Small dogs are prone to hypoglycemia or low blood sugar. It may cause them to look daze, stagger, stunned, tremor, weekness, seizures, etc. and it's important that you immediatly give them Nutrical (or honey, karo syrup) to regulate it.
This could be brought on by stress or over activity. Thus, it's important to feed your puppy 3 meals a day to avoid a low sugar count.
- Be prepare to be firm and have a couple of sleepless nights.
Due to change of environment, it is very normal for your puppy to show his or her unhappiness for the first few weeks.
They will cry at night or when they are left alone, and the quickest way for them to learn to be on their own, is by ignoring your puppy. Running to him everytime he cries will only encourage the behavior.
- Finally, enjoy your new friend! Your puppy is ready to share and explore the world with you and be one of your best companion for many years to come!
